A place to play- ongoing literacy homework assignment

Year 5 have an ongoing literacy homework assignment over the next couple of weeks. By now you should have handed in week 1's homework and be completing Week 2 this weekend.
The idea and resource comes from teacher Liz Charlton who has contributed this to Primaryresources.co.uk and will give you a chance to address all aspects of your persuasive writing and practice at home. Here is an online copy just in case you have misplaced your original copy.

In the next post, I will put up some suggestions for how to lay out week 2's homework letter to the council:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Place to Play (By Liz Charlton)
What would you design if you were allowed to build a new place to play? This term's homework is all about designing a place which can be enjoyed by everyone in their spare time. Think carefully about all the different people who might like to use the park and what they would need. This homework is to be handed in weekly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a spare, overgrown piece of land in your village. It is being used as a dumping ground for rubbish and it looks very unpleasant. You hear some older residents talking about how they would like somewhere to sit and chat during the warm summer afternoons and you have often thought that it would be a good place for a children's play park. You talk to your older sister, who has a young baby and find that she too would like somewhere safe for her baby to play. IT'S TIME FOR ACTION!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 1
Write a list of all the different types of people who would like to be able to use the waste ground. Write down the ways in which they might like to use the space and the times of day that it would be used. Remember that people of different ages will need different things.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 2
Write a letter to the council to explain your ideas for using the waste ground. You will need to persuade them that the park will be well used, by many different types of people, so use your information from last week to help you. Try to think of as many reasons as possible why the waste ground should be made more attractive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 3
You have written to the council asking them to help but you still need to know exactly what people want. You decide to hold a meeting, so a poster to advertise the meeting must be produced. Design an eye catching poster to explain where and when the meeting will be held. You need to give people an idea of what will be discussed at the meeting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 4
In order to show what could be done on the waste ground you design a piece of playing apparatus for young children. Draw the apparatus and explain how it is suitable for children of a particular age group.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 5
Describe some of the other features of the park and how you would make areas suitable for people of all ages and fitness. You can include plans and diagrams as well as written descriptions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 6
It's finally the day of the meeting. You have plans of what you think should be in the new park and you have persuaded members of the council and other interested people to attend. Write a play script of part of the meeting. Remember to use stage directions to help the reader to understand the way in which to act out the part.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 7
The meeting is over and exciting things are going on in the village. The local newspaper hears of the 'Park Project' and there is a report written about it. Write the newspaper report, explaining how the project started and what the end result will be. Include quotes from local residents and re member that not everyone will be pleased about it! You can include maps and 'photographs' of before and after.

Scratch

We have been learning to use the fantastic new program Scratch which has been developed by MIT (Massachussets institute of technology) in our ICT lessons to create a fishtank.

You can download it for FREE from the Massachussets institute of technology website! It's great fun!

Literacy March 2011

We are going to be beginning the study of persuasive texts in the next week or so. We will be:

  • Considering adverts and their features.
  • Writing our own adverts for a product
  • Creating an Apprentice-style sales pitch for a sports club in groups.
  • Appraising a series of persuasive letters, distinguishing between fact and opinion, identifying the features of persuasive letters and writing our own based on the issue of 'Should playtime be banned!!!?'
  • Imagining that a new supermarket is going to be built in our area: this will prompt our writing and speaking about it: writing to persuade local residents to use the supermarket, writing persuasive poetry to protest at the problems it will cause for wildlife, using dramatic techniques to argue the pros and cons of such a new venture coming to the area, present our opinions in a debate.
  • Creating persuasive resources to promote London Wetlands centre

So, get that persuasive language into gear!!!!

What we're learning next week

So you know what some of what we're up to next week...

Maths:

Lots of data-handling: graphs, charts and tables of all kinds- pictograms, bar-charts, bar-line graphs, line-graphs. We'll be investigating the data- identifying what conclusions we can draw from them, if there are modes (most frequent/popular item) in the data.

Plus, if you are a super-whiz, you may want to investigate the median, average and range...

English:

Over the next 2.5 weeks, we're studying older literature, most notably, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. We'll be covering a variety of activities including:

  • Practising our Comprehension skills (retrieving information, infering information, evaluating, commenting on preferences etc).

  • Using dictionaries to look up archaic (words which are not used so often nowadays), Victorian words, words we don't understand.

  • Revising the types of punctuation we encounter and why we use them.

  • Writing our own new chapters and settings for the book- using all our powers of description.

  • Identifying characters' personalities from what they say, do and others say about them.

  • Evaluating how characters develop.

  • Using comparative connectives.

  • Comparing film and literature.

Science:

We'll be looking at the functions of the heart, the muscles, what happens to our bodies when we exercise and why.

D&T/Topic:

Try and save/find a shoe box for our Victorian room. Have a look at Victorian room pictures if you can, for inspiration.

And for the week after...Get practising finding your pulse rate!!! Also,we'll be assessing your story-skills soon!

This week's homework:
