Week 5 summary
In music we are doing Egyptian drumming with a drum called a Jeba*. You have to lift it of the ground for a better sound. If you don’t you still get a sound but not as fantastic. You can play it with 2 fingers to get a more bouncy sound or as many fingers as you want. We also listened to some famous composers music on the Jeba. Not all of us had a Jeba some of us got normal drums.

The British Empire

This week we were learning about The British Empire. I learnt that there were 71 countries and Queen Victoria ruled all of them, such as India, Jamaica, Austrailia and Nigeria. I also learnt that traders went on a boat risking there life just for money. Many of the traders did not get to the destination caused by heavy and intense waves. Queen Victoria ruled so many countries so there will be back up for war and to be able to transport valuable goods, such as food and money. Today we celebrate by playing in the Commonwealth games but only countries that were in the British Empire may compete.

to practice ordering the planets and revise some other things about the Earth, Sun and Moon and planets.
BUT remember, though we painted flat circular versions of the planets, they are all in fact WHICH shape????

English recounts

We are working on recounts at the moment in our English lessons and will be working on these for the next couple of weeks. We will be looking at diaries, biographies, summarising the main points of a text in note form and planning our own based on our experiences.

Here are the checklists we would use for an effective recount:

L.O. I can write an interesting recount.

CHECKLIST: Does my work include the following features?

- Written in the past tense.
- My recount begins with an introduction by setting the scene- who, what, where, when, why
- Includes names of people and places
- Is written in chronological order
- Uses a closing statement/conclusion that sums up the writing.
- Uses time connectives/phrases, e.g. First, After, Next, Afterwards, Soon, Later, Meanwhile
- Includes detailed description of setting that interests the reader. (using interesting vocab)
- Is written in paragraphs, using a change of paragraph for a change of time/subject.
- Is interesting!
- Uses fullstops and capital letters appropriately.

Awesome adverbs

We have been working on using adverbs in our work, particularly playscripts but they crop up in EVERY piece of good writing! But what are they? Adverbs are words that tell us more about verbs and how they are done....they add information to the verb.
(A verb is a 'doing' word or a 'being' word, e.g. 'walk', 'feel' so 'I walk mournfully', tells you that I walked sadly)

We have made an interactive display of some useful AND interesting adverbs to help us in our work if we get stuck for ideas. If you are still not confident with using adverbs then click here to try some BBC quizzes or worksheets on adverbs.

Can you say you have achieved the target of using interesting adverbs in every piece of writing?

What happens to the shadows throughout the day?

5K have spent today investigating what happens to the length and position of shadows throughout the day.
At half an hour intervals, 2 children went out with the following equipment to draw a chalk line on the shadow and measure and record its length using a metre stick. As you can see, the length of the shadow continually changed.
Can you explain what has happened to the shadow? What does this tell us about shadows during the day?
